labyrinth

breakfast tacos with black beans, scrambled eggs, salsa verde, sour cream on tortillas with a mimosa!

The Place:
Yesterday morning I woke up to a thunderstorm, so I was thrilled about this week's brunch pick. Nitehawk Cinema conveniently located in the heart of Williamsburg is an old fashion movie theater that serves food, while you watch old movies take back the big screen. One of my best friends adores the movie Labyrinth so when it was announced that it would be playing I knew I would be along for the ride.  Especially since I recently asked her who David Bowie was! This goes to show that brunch will pretty much get me to go anywhere in life. I had never seen Labyrinth, and while I am not sure I will ever see it again, I did find it creepyily cute.

The Food & Drinks:
Nitehawk's menu is pretty substantial for being a movie theater, and while I was skeptical of the food, I was pleasantly surprised. I opted for the breakfast tacos that came with the complimentary mimosa. Totaling  $14.00 which is a great deal. Of course the menu is movie themed so I ordered from "The Breakfast Club" there are tons of choices all come paired with your choice of coffee, bloody mary, or mimosa! The bloody mary's looked delicious and seemed to be the theater favorite, but I couldn't commit and went with the mimosa instead.

Taking this picture was the true challenge since it literally was taken in a dark movie theater while Jennifer Connelly was crawling around with a giant monster who is best friends with rocks.

Overall:
Overall, I would give it a solid A, and recommend it to others. The theater was so cute and I would totally go back during other times for lunch or dinner. Who doesn't love being served delicious food and drinks, while watching a movie, and avoiding the pouring rain? Great job Nitehawk!

the dutch

Two sunny side up eggs, crispy whole grain waffle, apple, maple-bourbon, pecans.

The Place:
This weekend I ventured back to SOHO to try The Dutch (on the corner of Prince and Sullivan). Thankfully I have gotten in the habit of making reservations, because even for a Sunday at 2:00pm it was packed. They have two main dining areas and a bar, which is pretty sneaky big for a place in SOHO.

The Food & Drinks:
I usually never order waffles or pancakes, because I am such an egg lover and sweet brunches leave me feeling in a state of heavy self hatred, but this week was different. It takes true talent to master the art of a light carb loaded brunch and The Dutch was up for the challenge. This weekend I was able to experience the true brilliance of brunch. The fact that you never have to choose between sweet and savory. You can have both, however and whenever you'd like! I wouldn't allow myself to go eggless during this brunch so the side of eggs I added really complemented my waffle. The waffle was delicious, I mean the picture sort of speaks for it's self. I couldn't eat the whole thing, because it definitely is very heavy and sweet but it was delicious none the less. Our table also ordered biscuits and honey which it seemed like every table was ordering and they looked too good to pass up. After ordering them the table was in agreement that we were glad we didn't let them pass us by!

I guess as I am growing older the difference between cheap and expensive alcohol has officially become a concern of mine. Gone are the days of cheap wine and liquor for me. I ordered the mimosa and was much happier with this version versus last week's complimentary cocktail which tasted like college. As much as I love mimosas, I am a sangria lover at heart, so let the quest for a great brunch spot that serves sangria begin!!

Overall:
Overall, I would give it a solid A, and recommend it to others. A little on the pricier side, but a delicious brunch nonetheless.

table for one

Jane Restaurant
Classic Eggs Benedict
poached eggs, Canadian bacon, English muffin, hollandaise and a white peach Bellini.

Yesterday started off with a beautiful morning yoga class in Brooklyn overlooking Manhattan. With every vinyasa flow, I grew more and more excited for the brunch ahead of me. So when class was over I quickly ditched my yoga mat headed off to Jane's Restaurant. Yesterday's brunch was a solo mission, which is a new and exciting twist to my brunch ritual. There is something so liberating about a table for one.

Upon arriving at Jane's it was packed. Thankfully I had made a reservation, so the wait wasn't too terrible after checking in with the maitre d'. While I was waiting for my name to be called, I was in the perfect place to scout out the food, so I definitely was prepared to order once I sat down. Once seated at my table, I reviewed the menu, and ordered the above. Honestly, I didn't think it was anything spectacular. I have much higher expectations. My eggs were softer then I usually prefer, and the champagne tasted like it was straight out of a dorm room. However, the home fries were amazing, and they saved the dish from being disastrous. I seriously am still thinking about them.

Overall, it was fine. Didn't give me everything I wanted, but hey I guess that is to be expected at some point during this journey. I would recommend it if you were in the area and have no where else to go. There were other menu items that looked decent, so I am sure that they aren't all soft eggs. Plus I know their dinner is great, so I can't discredit it too much.  Though there is one thing I wanted to point out... my server and the staff seemed to be quite perplexed as to what I was doing there alone. My water was never refilled, everyone else enjoyed complementary bread baskets (where I did not), and my eggs were definitely served with a little shade. Oh Jane Restaurant, I don't know why you are so confused,  I do not need a man, friend, coworker, or stranger to enjoy brunch. Of course they are lovely when I do have them, but nothing stands in the way of me and my brunch. All  I need are decently cooked eggs, a damn bread basket that everyone else gets, and a proper cocktail. I loved sitting there alone with my magazine, relaxing into my Sunday routine. I just wish I would have loved your food and attitude a little more.

Regardless, there's no place like brunch so here's to next weekend. Any recommendations?

brunchday

Green Eggs and Ham from Brooklyn Label in Greenpoint. It was delicious. Eggs scrambled with pesto and spinach, sitting on top of challah bread, topped with crispy bacon. Paired perfectly with a prickly pear champagne cocktail.

Everyone looks forward to the weekend, I however look forward to brunchday. A magical mid-afternoon date filled with breakfast favorites, and delicious cocktails.

For the past two months, I have revamped my Sunday's to look more like brunchdays. My mission is to brunch every Sunday either alone, or with various friends, in as many places as possible.

Here are the brunchday rules.

Prior to Brunch
1. Sleep in. I work six days a week, so this is a sacred rule.
2. Pick a place. Either that you have read/heard about, or stumbled upon. No repeats allowed, not yet at least.
3. Drink coffee
4. Be as productive as possible whether it is a hot shower, face mask, or chores.

At Brunch
1. Glance around the restaurant and ask menu questions.
2. Order a cocktail (I only do ones that are champagne or wine based)
3. Order brunch (The other week I ordered lunch and regretted it for a full seven days)
4. Instagram brunch before digging in to enjoy.

Post Brunch
1. Take a walk around whichever neighborhood I am in.
2.  Find a nail salon for a  good after brunch manicure. #treatyoself
3. Describe and rate brunch experience (this is a new one, to be implemented this weekend!)
4. Relax the rest of the day whether it be catching up on television, reading, napping, etc.
